FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Some commonly asked questions and their, hopefully, simple answers...

Q: What is NOS?

A: NOS is a web-based 'Nomadic' Java OS. It allows you to access your programs and data from any machine with an internet connection & Java. Take your environment with you!

Q: Why does NOS need to be a signed applet?

A: In order to allow you to upload files NOS needs to be able to access your local file system. Normal Java applets are not allowed to do this so NOS must be a signed applet that requests permission to run.

Q: Why do I keep getting a "Warning: Java VM Heap Space is Low!" message?

A: NOS uses a lot more memory than a normal Java applet. The message box will tell you how to increase the amount of memory available to the Java VM that runs NOS. If that's not enough then there is also a guide with pictures here.
